In celebration of the R.M.S. Queen Mary 2’s 10th anniversary, Graupner added this unique and beautifully detailed model to our Premium Line of ships. Arriving Almost Ready to Run, the brushless motors, electrical system and rudder servo are already placed, and only the radio need be installed before the boat is seaworthy. For reliability, performance, further telemetry and model-specific function expansion we highly recommend a Graupner radio such as the mc-16.
The installed brushless electric motors have a special winding to optimally drive the custom-made pod drives for the QM2. The ship model has 4 azimuth thrusters that represent a faithful reproduction of the Rolls Royce Mermaid thrusters. The azimuth thrusters are controlled through the specially designed servo (already installed).
The Graupner Premium Line ships are carefully handcrafted and assembled using CNC processing to replicate the model as originally as possible. The hull is made from molded GRP complemented by the superstructure and deck which are constructed from laser-cut ABS parts. Many of the small items are made from metal, and almost everything is factory-assembled. The hull, parts of the superstructure, the masts and fittings are spray painted using semi-matt paints. Decals are already applied. With so many details and scale fittings, the Premium Line ships all have an impressive scale appearance.
The R.M.S. Queen Mary 2 is the flagship of the British Cunard Line shipping company and is one of the largest passenger ships in the world. Queen Elizabeth II christened the Queen Mary 2 at a state ceremony on January 8, 2004. The maiden voyage took place from January 12th to 26th 2004, starting from the ship's home port of Southampton and ending at Port Everglades in Florida.
Intended for routine crossings of the Atlantic Ocean, the QM2 was specially designed differently from other cruise liners. No expense was spared in the ship’s construction, with individual berths costing up to $300,000 each, and a dizzying array of restaurants, bars, swimming pools, casinos, ballrooms, theatres, a planetarium, kennels and nurseries. The overall ship’s construction required 40% more steel than standard cruise ships yet despite the large size, the QM2 has a cruising speed of 26 knots (top speed 30 knots), much faster than most ships of her class. Gas turbines augment the diesel power generated through her integrated electric propulsion system and on-board desalination plants provide her with fresh water.
The QM2 has made more than 200 transatlantic crossings, has been in service over 10 years, and continues to draw crowds wherever she is docked. In 2016 she recently underwent a retrofitting of her engines and propulsion systems, staterooms, and amenities.
